  25. The following is a list of vegetable and herbs which grow well 
  26. together and protect one another from insect attack:
  27.  
  28. Many herbs are natural insect repellents that can keep your garden
  29. bug-free and reduce or eliminate the need for potentially harmful
  30. pesticides.
  31.  
  32. By using Companion planting, many gardeners are discovering that
  33. they can discourage garden pests without harming helpful insects
  34. such as bees and ladybugs.  Some herbs, through their odors or root
  35. secretions, will deter pests naturally.  An added bonus is; these
  36. same herbs, planted as companions in your garden, will season the
  37. fruits and vegetables of your labor.

  39. Some herbs even improve the flavor or growth rate of their companion
  40. vegetables.
  41.  
  42. Companion planting is the ultimate way to bring the balance of
  43. nature into your garden.  Just do your best to match suitable plant
  44. with suitable plant---and the rest will follow.

  52. BASIL: Plant with tomatoes to improve growth and flavor and to repel
  53.        flies and mosquitoes.  Do not plant near rue.

  55. BAY LEAF: A fresh leaf bay leaf in each storage container of beans or
  56.           grains will deter weevils and moths.  Sprinkle with other
  57.           deterrent herbs in garden as natural insecticide dust.

  59. BEE BALM (Oswego): Plant with tomatoes to improve growth and flavor.

  61. BORAGE: Companion plant for tomatoes, squash and strawberries. Deters
  62.         tomato worms.

  64. CARAWAY: Good for loosening compacted soil.

  66. CATNIP: Deters flea beetles.

  68. CAMOMILE: Improves flavor of cabbages and onions.

  77. FENNEL: Most plants dislike it.  Plant to itself.

  81. GARLIC: Plant near roses to repel aphids.

  83. GOPHER PURGE: Deters gophers, and moles.

  85. HORSERADISH: Plant in potato patch to keep away potato bugs.

  87. HYSSOP: Companion plant to cabbage and grapes, deters cabbage moths.
  88.         Do not plant near radishes.

  90. KELP: When used in a powder mixture or tea spray, this versatile
  91.       sea herb will not only repel insects but feed the vegetables.

  93. LEMON BALM: Sprinkle throughout the garden in an herbal powder 
  94.             mixture.

  96. LOVAGE: Improves flavor and health of most plants.

  98. MARIGOLDS (Calendula): The workhorse of pest deterrents.  Keeps soil
  99.                        free of nematodes; discourages many insects.
  100.                        Plant freely throughout the garden.

  102. MARJORAM: Improves flavor of all vegetables.
  103. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  104. MINT: Deters white cabbage moths, and improves the health of cabbage
  105.       and tomatoes.

  107. MOLE PLANTS: Deter moles and mice if planted here and there 
  108.              throughout the garden.

  110. NASTURTIUMS: Plant with tomatoes, radishes, cabbage, cucumbers, and
  111.              under fruit trees.  Deters aphids and pests of
  112.              curcurbit family.

  114. PARSLEY: Plant and sprinkle on tomatoes, and asparagus.
  115. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  116. PEPPERMINT: Repels white cabbage moths.
  117. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  118. PETUNIAS: Remember mom or grandma planting these?  She had good 
  119.           reason, even though she may have only planted them for
  120.           tradition's sake.  They repel the asparagus beetle, tomato
  121.           worm and general garden pests.  Also, a good companion to
  122.           tomatoes, but plant everywhere.

  124. PURSLANE: This edible weed makes good ground cover in the corn.  Use
  125.           the stems, leaves and seeds in stir-frys.  Pickle the green
  126.           seed pod for capers.

  128. ROSEMARY: Companion plant to cabbage, beans, carrots and sage. Deters
  129.           cabbage moths, bean beetles, and carrot flies.

  131. RUE: Deters Japanese beetles in roses and raspberries.
  132. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  133. SAGE: Companion plant with rosemary, cabbage, and carrots to deter
  134.       cabbage moths, beetles, carrot flies.  Do not plant near 
  135.       cucumbers.

  137. SOUTHERNWOOD: Plant with cabbage, and here and there in the garden.
  138. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  139. SUMMER SAVORY: Plant with beans and onions to improve growth and
  140.                flavor.  Discourages cabbage moths.

  142. TANSY: Plant with fruit trees, roses and raspberries.  Deters flying
  143.        insects, Japanese beetles, striped cucumber beetles, squash
  144.        bugs, and ants.

  146. TARRAGON: Plant throughout the garden, not many pests like this one.

  148. THYME: Deters cabbage worms.
